The Evansville Vanderburgh County Historical Society will host a walking tour of historic Baptisttown on May 16 at 1:00 p.m., beginning with a presentation and discussion in the Large Group Room of Central Library. Led by Evansville African American Museum founding board secretary Watez G. Phelps and recent University of Southern Indiana Gloria Hinterscher, the program will explore life in the Baptisttown neighborhood of Evansville, highlighting both well-known and everyday residents.
The discussion will cover Baptisttown's role as a place of refuge and home for Black families migrating from the South after emancipation. through the early 1900's to the 1970's. It will also address the area's food culture, professional achievements, artistic depictions of the neighborhood, by Robert "Runningham" Johnson, and the work of Dallas Sprinkles, author of History of Evansville's Blacks.
