Former University of Evansville African American Alumni Association President Watez Phelps will discuss desegregation and busing in Evansville from the early 1970's to the present.
Watez Phelps will discuss the success and failures of desegregation and busing in Evansville. Phelps was part of one of the first cohorts of African-American students to bused in Evansville. He will reflect on his personal experience and that of his classmates as well as a historical analysis of the effectiveness of busing. Also, he will use Alfred Wiley's 1962 seminal doctoral dissertation on segregation within the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation as a point of departure.
